Your baby this week
Your baby is the size of a lime โ and the reflexes have switched on: if you poke your belly, your baby likely squirms in response (you won't feel it yet). Fingers open and close, toes curl, the baby makes sucking motions, and the kidneys produce urine that's released into the amniotic fluid.
The digestive system is practicing its contractions, and the bone marrow is making white blood cells. Almost every organ and system is now formed โ from here, the work is maturing and growing.
Your body & symptoms: the tide turns
As the placenta fully takes over hormone production, many moms notice nausea loosening, energy returning in pockets, and food becoming appealing again. Your uterus has risen above your pubic bone โ your doctor may now find the heartbeat with a handheld Doppler at appointments, and a small bump may start hinting itself.
If your symptoms haven't eased yet, hang on: for many women the turn comes in the next week or two.
The NT scan & first-trimester screening
If you chose screening, your NT ultrasound (weeks 11โ13+) and blood work likely happen around now. The results give a personalized risk estimate for certain chromosomal conditions. Whatever you decide about screening is a personal choice โ your doctor's job is clear information, not pressure.
Sharing the news
Many parents treat week 12 as the green light to announce widely โ the end of the first trimester is a natural milestone. Tell people in whatever order and way feels right to you; there's no rulebook.
โ ๏ธ Warning signs โ call your doctor the same day
Heavy bleeding ยท severe pain ยท fainting ยท fever. They still matter โ if something feels wrong, making the call is always the right move.
