Your baby this week
Sweet-pea sized, and busy: the heart is beating in a regular rhythm, tiny buds that become arms and legs are appearing, and the early brain, eyes and ears are under construction. The head is still large compared with the body โ the brain is the flagship project right now. If you have an early ultrasound this week, that flickering pixel is the moment most parents never forget.
Your body & symptoms: nausea joins the team
Morning sickness typically arrives in earnest around week 6 (blame rapidly rising hCG and estrogen). Add tender breasts, fatigue, frequent bathroom trips, bloating and a sense of smell that could win awards. If you don't have nausea, that can be perfectly normal too โ symptoms vary enormously from mom to mom and pregnancy to pregnancy.
Eating when everything smells unbearable
Small, frequent, bland and cold foods often go down better than big hot meals (less cooking smell). Keep plain crackers by the bed for before you get up, sip fluids steadily through the day, and let "good enough" nutrition be enough for now โ the first trimester is about getting through, not eating perfectly.
Rest is your job right now
Your body is building a placenta and a person while running your normal life. Early nights, naps when you can grab them, and saying no without guilt are not indulgences โ they're part of the work.
โ ๏ธ Warning signs โ call your doctor the same day
Heavy bleeding ยท severe pain ยท fainting ยท a fever ยท vomiting that leaves you unable to keep fluids down for 24 hours. If something feels wrong, making the call is always the right move.
